Empusae

[Funestus sleeve] "Funestus" (Album, 2003)  !DSO Recommended!

Divine Comedy

The sleeve to this album looks like something from the early :wumpscut: catalogue, but although this seems to share similarly dark subject matter, the way that Empusae explore it is quite different. Largely instrumental, what might start off as one thing can quite easily end up as something very different.

Part noise/part soundscape/part dark folk, this is has an eclectic range of sources but neatly pulls them together into an impressive, usually beat-driven whole. God artfully incorporates distorted samples from Al Pacino's 'God' speech from the film Devil's Advocate and whilst it might not appeal to God-fearing folk, it certainly appealed to me. The core album has ten tracks and then there are four remixes, one apiece by H.I.V.+, This Morn' Omina, Implant and Empusae themselves (these four remixes are of songs otherwise not on the album). Strongly recommended to those with broad tastes for dark music. 8/10
